Daily Fantasy Comes to the Olympics!

This year, the greatest show on earth is coming to Brazil. The 2016 Summer Olympics will officially kick off in Rio de Janeiro this Friday, and we here at DailyFantasyUK can’t wait for the action to begin.

Daily Fantasy and the Olympics

Up until now, many of our favourite daily fantasy sites have been suspiciously quiet about the Olympics. This isn’t so surprising. Many of the most popular Olympic sports, such as swimming and athletics, aren’t very DFS-friendly.

Fantasy scoring systems rely on a wealth of stats, after all. This means they’re not well-suited to sports where the only aim is to run the fastest, jump the highest, and be the strongest.

Other Olympic sports are simply too niche to attract fantasy players. Much as we’d love to see daily fantasy modern pentathlonwater polo or rhythmic gymnastics, they’re unlikely to be on offer any time soon. (In fact, if it were up to us, we’d push the boundaries of DFS much further!)

Luckily for us, however, there are plenty of sports where the Olympics and daily fantasy overlap. Thanks to Mondogoal and DraftKings, the Olympics is getting even more exciting with daily fantasy football, basketball, and golf!

Football

Football has been a constant fixture in the Olympic Games since the 1930s, with the women’s game included for the first time in 1996. Despite this, the Olympic football competition usually receives little attention in the UK.

Given the UK’s love of football, you might expect it to be one of the highlights of the Olympics. In fact, there isn’t even a British football team competing in Rio. In order to take part, the UK would have to enter a single team. While we (just about) managed to put a team together for London 2012, the Home Nations usually prefer to keep their teams separate.

Despite this lack of British representation, there are still plenty of reasons to watch. For daily fantasy football lovers, Mondogoal is offering tournaments for both the men’s and women’s games. So, why not give it a go?

The scoring system is the same as for the EPL or Euros, so there are no new rules to learn. Plus, with the football competition starting before most other sports, this is a great way to play some DFS in the early stages of the games. So, what are you waiting for? Visit Mondogoal and check out DFS Olympic football!

Golf

After an absence of more than a century, golf is returning to the Olympics in 2016. Even before the games have begun, however, the sport has seen more than its fair share of controversy. Fears over the Zika virus have already prompted several top stars to pull out, including Jason Day and Rory McIlroy. Nonetheless, the show must go on, and DraftKings have announced that they’ll be offering DFS golf for the Olympics!

DraftKings Olympic Golf

It gets even better. DraftKings’ Olympic golf tournament has a guaranteed prize pool of $1,000,000 – the winner will take home $100k! Who needs big names when you’ve got big prizes? Check it out at DraftKings!

Basketball

In addition to their golf tournament, DraftKings are also covering Olympic basketball. With the familiar salary cap of $50,000, it’s your job to draft a team of 8 players.

There are dozens of different tournaments, 50/50s, and head-to-heads to enter, so you’re bound to find something right for you. And with entry fees starting from just 25¢, why not give it a shot? Top prizes go up to $50,000, so you’ve got nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain.
